Choosing and Caring for a Wig

Choosing and Caring for a Wig

Why do people wear wigs? There are several reasons and the most relevant reason is to hide a bald head and show a stylish, fashionable and aesthetic profile. Wigs are mostly made of horse-hair, human hair or synthetic hair. Wig is a short form for the 17th century English word “periwig”. Actors wear wigs to get the nearest resemblance to the character they portray. Wigs have been used since ancient times. Egyptians used wigs to protect their clean shaven head from the sun. Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians and Assyrians also used wigs for style and to cover their head.

Wigs contain the cap which is its base, where the hair is attached. Caps are available in different types and hair is stuck to the cap using numerous different techniques. Hair is attached in wefts on the wig. Hair strings doubled over and closely sewn together in longer strands is the process by which wigs are made.

Wigs made from human hair have a very natural look. Depending upon the personal tastes, the human hair wigs can be colored, styled, cut or “permed”. These wigs need lot of care and they are more expensive. Similar to human hair, the wigs are also to be cleaned with shampoo, dried, and conditioned to preserve its natural look and feel. People who do not have the time or inclination to do these chores have the option of a synthetic blend wig resembling human hair.

Most of the good quality synthetic wigs are identical to human hair wigs. They are not very expensive and need very little care and maintenance. The synthetic wig retains the curl, wave, texture and volume due to the “memory” of the monofilament fiber hair. They get damaged when hair dryers, curling irons or hot rollers are used to get a wave.

What should be the correct size of the wig? Most of the wigs fit a head circumference of 22.5 inches. The wig should be worn on the natural hairline, nearly four fingers above the eyebrows. In the back, pull down the wig to the natural hairline. Using the elastic tab and Velcro provided in the back, adjust the wig to get a comfortable and secure fit.

Nearly 10 to 30 percent of excess hair is provided in most wigs so it is advisable to avail the services of a professional hair stylist to fine tune the wig so that it suits your features and gives a stylish look.

The wigs should be stored on a wig stand or a mannequin when it is not used so that the shape is properly preserved.

Perspiration, environment, and lifestyle are some of the factors to be taken into account when deciding the frequency of cleaning the wig. Normally it is advisable to clean the wig after a fortnight’s use. Strictly follow the guidelines given by the manufacturer, for cleaning and conditioning the wig.

There are special styling accessories such as conditioners, hair sprays and shampoos to keep the wig clean. Cool water should be used to rinse the wig after the conditioning process. Leave the wig to dry naturally and avoid scrubbing the wig.

Storing and Caring for Your Wig

Storing and Caring for Your Wig

When it’s not crowing your head, where do you put your wig? Proper storage will help you make the most out of your wig. By storing it correctly, you can extend the life of your wig and enjoy using it for a long time.

Styrofoam Wig Head for Daily or Short-term Storage

You can use a Styrofoam wig head to store your wig for short periods of time. Placing your wig on one helps maintain the shape of the wig. Wig heads, also called wig stands, are also the best way to ‘store’ your wigs because these stands are built specifically for that purpose. Styrofoam wig heads are lightweight, functional and affordable. However, make sure to keep the wig stand clean as it can get dusty or otherwise dirty with use.

Long-term Wig Storage

If you want to put away your wig for some time, put it in plastic so that it doesn't dry out and or get dusty. Using a shaper made of tissue paper will help retain its shape. Using the original wig packaging is also a good option if you need to put away your wig for more than a few days or weeks.

How to Store Your Wig When You don’t have a Proper Stand or Storage Box

If you’re in a place where you don’t have a proper wig stand, you can wrap it in a scarf to ward off dust. You can also create a ‘storage box’ with some easy-to-find supplies. For this, you will need a plastic storage bin that you can get for a couple of dollars at a convenience store and some tissue papers. Layer the base of the bin with tissue papers. Then crumple some more tissue papers and place them inside the wig. Next, fold the wig (temples touching) in half and place it in the box. Put another layer of tissue paper on top of the wig and then close the lid.

In any case, don’t just throw your wig around when you’re not wearing it. Also, don’t leave it in direct sunlight; keep it away from windows that receive sunlight throughout the day. Your bedroom is the perfect place to store your wig since it’s safer than others where guests, kids etc. usually move in. Besides, your bedroom is also convenient as this is where you dress up for the day (or night), a ritual that definitely involves putting on or removing your wig!

Choosing a Natural Looking Texture

Choosing a Natural Looking Texture

Goodbye “Doll Hair”, Hello, Naturally Beautiful Hair Textures

Women often have to settle for that “doll hair” look because they can’t find beautiful wigs with natural looking textures. Since you’re reading this, you don’t have to be one of those women!

Ruth’s Beauty has a spectacular collection of beautiful wigs that flaunt natural looking textures and styles. In this collection, you can easily find the most flattering wig textures and styles.

So, which one should you choose? Actually only you can decide that. We can only help you make the best decision by telling you all about the different natural-looking textures.

Silky Straight

As the name suggests, this texture is silky and straight. It’s also smooth and shiny. You can either choose Indian or Chinese Remy silky straight hair. With Indian Remy, the hair dries with a natural-looking wave when you wash it. While Chinese Remy is better at maintaining its straightness, it is a bit coarser than Indian Remy. Moreover, Indian Remy does a better job at holding curls.

Ruth’s Beauty offers you natural silky straight wigs. With the slight waving on this natural texture, it is the best straight hair wig on the market. Humidity will not mess up the hair when you straighten it and it goes back to its original texture. This texture is ideal for professional women who are much into waves or curls.

Curly/Wavy

The curly or wavy texture is created by carefully processing Remy hair. Curly and wavy hair is available in basically two categories based on their maintenance requirements:

Low Maintenance Curls

  • Body Wave
  • Deep Wave
  • Spanish Wavy

Medium to High Maintenance Curls

  • Curly
  • Kinky Curly
  • Water Wave
  • Jerry Curl

These curly or wavy textures are ideal for the extrovert. Outgoing women love our wavy textures as they help them be the center of attention wherever they go.

You can choose any of our curly/wavy textures, but do keep in mind their maintenance requirements. If you don’t mind putting some time into caring for your wigs, you can most certainly go for the likes of Kinky Curly or Jerry Curl. On the other hand, if you like to keep things simple, Spanish Wavy, Body Wave or Deep Wave is the way to go.

Yaki Hair

Yaki is a fabulous texture that resembles African American and Afro-Caribbean hair. It is made by adding micro kink texture to straight hair (Indian or Malaysian), and is the perfect choice for African American women. Ruth’s Beauty has the most spectacular Yaki wigs to jazz up your hair style and overall look in an elegant way. You can choose Yaki hair from a range of textures, each one perfect for a specific type of style and set of preferences. The more popular textures available at Ruth’s Beauty include:

Kinky Straight

Also known as regular Yaki, this boasts a heavier texture that looks natural and far from chemically treated. It looks like it has been naturally blow-dried or pressed lightly. Simply put, it is really thick Yaki hair. You can straighten, curl and style it as you wish. Maintenance is simple with this texture and so is making an impression. It’s the perfect choice for the bold and confident woman.

Yaki Straight or Light Yaki

In Light Yaki, the micro kink added to the straight hair is lighter. The Yaki Straight texture is a sober straight texture without the silky shine. It is comparable to freshly permed African American hair.
